Emily wanted to visit some colleges this summer, so we added UCSD and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo to this trip. (The Disneyland part of the trip is here.) (Still several more colleges to visit, but we have some time yet!)
After our UCSD visit we headed into San Diego to be tourists. Our hotel gave us the names of a few restaurants to try, so we headed to Puesto for lunch—they call their fare Mexican street food, and it was delicious! We loved the open-air dining (we ate on the second floor balcony seating), and the food and drinks were just wonderful.
After lunch we wandered around and shopped in The Headquarters and in Seaport Village.
Another iPhone selfie:
While we were in Seaport Village, suddenly all these runners came through sporting red dresses–even (and especially!) the men! It was hilarious, and we were so glad to have been there at the moment they came through! We asked one of them what was going on, and they said it was their annual Red Dress Run. He explained it as a run for free beer and charity.
Then we drove to Balboa Park—it’s gorgeous! We wished we could spend more time there wandering around, but it got dark. That night we had dinner that night at Croce’s Park West—also very highly recommended!
The next day we shopped in La Jolla before making our way up to San Luis Obispo to check out Cal Poly. Again we ate on the balcony at Novo’s:
Another Instagram photo:
We stayed at the Madonna Inn since Tom had never stayed there (we did last year with my friend Alli and her son—that was a fun trip, too!). This time we had time to enjoy the pool—it’s beautiful!
This photo was Emily’s idea—it was her #100happydays post for Instagram that day, and I loved it so I copied her…
On out way home we stopped for some wine tasting in the Paso Robles region. We can’t wait to try more wineries out there!
And for dinner on the way home that night, we stopped in San Juan Bautista and sat in the garden at Jardine’s. It was a great end to a wonderful trip!

Jessica, your pictures are beautiful and reminded me of our trip to San Diego in 2014. We also did wineries in PasoRobles and ate at Croce’ s.
