Last week, I attended WPPI for my first time. In fact it was my first ever photography convention! Before that, I hadn’t been to Vegas in 25 years, so a lot has changed. It was FUN! My friend Alli and I met there. We stayed at the Bellagio (which is a gorgeous hotel!), and traipsed […]
Sounds like you had a wonderful time in Vegas. I’ve never been myself, but after seeing all of your lovely pictures, I know it’s a place my camera and I will love!ReplyCancel
Ummm, WOW! Looks like you had plenty of inspiration in Vegas. You make it look so fantastic, I am inspired to go visit (never been!). Congrats on your first photog convention! I recognize the snow flake photo in one of the overhead pictures.ReplyCancel
So jealous and happy for you all at the same time. Truly gorgeous pictures!!!!ReplyCancel

You’ve inspired me!! I live here, and really don’t take advantage of all there is to see and do. I really need to get out more! I found you via Clickin moms, and really admire your work. How did you capture the Bellagio lights picture, what camera and settings? Beautiful pictures!!!ReplyCancel
Franny, thank you so much; that means a lot! Do you mean the Bellagio fountain show? If so, the settings were ISO 4000, f/5.6, and SS 1/20. I braced the camera on the railing in front of me to add stability since my shutterspeed was so low. If I answered about the wrong image, let me know; I’m happy to help! Oh–I was using the 5D Mark III.ReplyCancel
these are absolutely amazing! i went to vegas for the first time last year and it is quite the experience. sensory overload but in the best of ways. looks like you had a great time!ReplyCancel
Hi Stephanie! Thank you so much for your kind words; it means a lot to me! I am happy to help; PM me on CM or Contact me through my blog any time!ReplyCancel
Hi again, Stephanie! No, I don’t use a speedlight. I intend to learn, but as of now I’m still all natural light. I do bump up my ISO–sometimes as high as 12,800, though I try REALLY hard to avoid going that high as the noise can get bad. I’m not sure what you mean by diffuser in relation to low-light photography? I use one for portraits on occasion to diffuse harsh sun. I’m not sure of the brand name but it’s a small one–36″. I really only bring it for portrait sessions, though–never for travel.ReplyCancel
This month our little circle worked on consciously “framing” our subject within our image. I thought of a few ways to interpret this, and initially was planning to do more of a “spying on her” shot where the subject was unaware of the photographer and where the viewer was essentially “peering in” on the subject […]
This month our little group tackled food photography! It’s definitely something I need to work on, but it was fun trying, especially because Emily made me cupcakes to work with, which then of course SOMEONE had to eat! And just for fun, here’s a pullback of my window set-up because it kind of cracks me […]
OH my Jessica!!! Love the green & pink + that close up is just gorgeous! Your pullback made me smile {I included one this time too} and I am wondering what the greatest pop songs are now… lol.ReplyCancel
OK, so clearly it’s one of our favorite places to visit… In fact, this time we bit the bullet and got annual passes (since we’ll be there at least twice more this year, it made sense), so I will get to play photographer in Disneyland a lot in the next 365 days! As we often […]
Beautiful!!! Such fun and the most amazing memories. You are the sweetest family ever!!!ReplyCancel

Jessica, these are so much fun! I love the images you captured of the park, especially the roller coaster blurred with the trees, sunflare and Disney building facade-perfectly magical. We are getting our annual passes next week when we are there! Hope made it to the Carsland at dusk lighting. Can’t wait to see many more!ReplyCancel
we are disneyland addicts ourselves. lol!ReplyCancel

I love these pictures!! We just went to Disneyland in January, and I can’t say that my pictures are quite as amazing as these?! I have photo envy right now!! What lens did you most use while you were at Disney?ReplyCancel
Hi Franny! Sorry I didn’t respond to your question sooner! My most often used lens in Disneyland is my Tamron 28-300. At night I usually switched to the Canon 24-70/II because of its lower-light capability. The Tamron is fantastic for its versatility and affordability, but the Canon can’t be beat for color, sharpness, and it’s low-light capabilities. It’s a tradeoff!ReplyCancel
I love how cooperative your beautiful daughter is! Lucky you!!!
Do you shoot with flash at all? What do you do for your WB?
I really love how you edit or process your images! I would love to learn from you. We were in SanFransisco last year for a conference. At that time I was looking for another photog to spend the day with and learn a bit from. I wish I had stumbled upon you then!ReplyCancel
Hi Stephanie! I’ve made fits and starts at learning to use my Speedlight, but it feels so cumbersome that I am not totally inspired by it yet… So I am mostly a natural light photographer. I mostly use AWB because I love the soft, creamy light I usually get on my Mark III, but if it’s off on the LCD then I go with Kelvin. I’m happy to help with other questions–I’m an open book! And I always love meeting up with other photographers, too! Thank you for visiting my site!ReplyCancel
This one was really hard for me! I am fine with portraits that I can set up, with props or clothing to showcase, even with posing. But I struggle with anything related to lifestyle photography. I scoured the internet for advice and examples, and in the end I interpreted an “environmental portrait” as simply one […]
I can’t believe how different our two 8th graders are….Things look a little happier at your house…and a whole lot cleaner 🙂 Beautfiul shots of your daughter!ReplyCancel
Love these Jessica! It is so fun to see Emily in her element, with her animals & doing homework! The planned shoots are always fabulous but there is something so real about this type of portrait. Tell her that G has a ton of animals too & all I could think was that we still have years to go with them on the bed when I saw her collection! 😀ReplyCancel
Thanks to the efforts of Elicia and Megan, or “local” CMers (well, local to Northern California, at least—we came from all over the place!) had another get-together, this time in Sonoma! Emily and I had such fun meeting up with everyone, and the weather cooperated beautifully. We started out with a private tasting at Cline […]
It’s February 2, which means that it’s time for my monthly blog circle post! (I am so thrilled that the “Way I View” group decided to stick together for another year–these women never cease to amaze and inspire me!) Our theme for February was close-up portraiture. This one isn’t a stretch for me as I […]
ooh I love the hairpiece and how it so perfectly matches the color of E’s beautiful eyes <3 The last one –how that pretty face fills the frame so wonderfully… happy sigh!ReplyCancel
i always love how you capture E in such a tender way… and she is just so beautiful in these! love the ringlets and the hair clip. and of course her EYES and smile! <3ReplyCancel
Today was an interesting day. Surreal. We woke up and got Emily off to school as usual. Met friends for coffee after drop-off, and Tom joined us for a while as he sometimes does on Fridays. Then I came home and hopped on the computer for a few minutes to check on a few things […]
Oh Jessica. This is so heart wrechingly written, that it feels like my own child was there. I’m so thankful that everything ended up being ok, but you are right…what a strange world we live in. God bless Em’s teacher. What an amazing man.ReplyCancel
So scary! I can not imagine the emotions you felt going through that today and I sure hope I never have to. It is sad that our children are no longer safe at school.ReplyCancel
Jessica, I am so sorry your sweet, precious Emily went through such a long ordeal of fear. What a nightmare. I’m glad for the happy outcome but I can’t imagine how shaken up you must feel. Huge hugs, sweet pea.ReplyCancel
Jessica, What a difficult day for all of you!!! I can’t imaging how frightening it was for Emily and how lucky for her to have such an extraordinary teacher to help her through the days events!! I am still thinking of you guys!! <3ReplyCancel

Just so so happy these 2 and a half hours ended happily for you all. And i am so in awe of Emily’s teacher who sounds like he was astoundingly brave.ReplyCancel
Jessica, I am so sorry that you all had to go through this. So glad everyone is safe and in such a dark hour, heroes were around you. Big hugs. xoxoReplyCancel
